In 2015, actress and singer, Selena Gomez announced that she had contracted Lupus.

Also known as the “disease of 1,000 faces”, Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that makes the immune system become hyperactive and attack normal, healthy tissue. Meaning that one’s body literally attacks itself.

In June of 2017 she found out she desperately needed a kidney transplant, as her kidneys were about to stop working, due to the disease.

But the waiting list was 7 to 10 years long.

At the time she was living with a friend called Francia Raisa, who stated:

She was asking me about my day and she grabbed a water bottle out of the fridge and tried to open it and couldn’t.

Then she threw it on the floor, and she fell to the floor and started crying.

I was like, “What is wrong with you?”

She said: “I need a new kidney. I don’t know what I’m going to do, the wait list is 7 to 10 years.”

And it just came out of me, and I said: “I’ll get tested.”

I called her assistant behind her back to get the information, and that’s how the process started.

Due to this being an emergency situation, Francia did a blood and urine test, underwent a full physical and psychological evaluation, which takes about 6 months, in one single day.

And soon, they found out that Francia… was a match.

Selena stated:

She lived with me in this interesting time where my kidneys were just done. That was it and I didn’t want to ask a single person in my life.

The thought of asking somebody to do that was really difficult for me. And she volunteered and did it… The fact that she was a match, I mean, that’s unbelievable.

Francia was obviously fearful for her own health, but she decided to go through with it, to save her friend, even after she was required to write a will in case she died during the surgery.
